Will Pucovski Announces Retirement at 27
A Difficult Year
Will Pucovski, 27, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, describing the past year as a “difficult one.” The Victoria batter, who played only one Test match for Australia, has faced multiple concussion issues throughout his career. His most recent concussion occurred in March 2024 during a Sheffield Shield match when he was hit on the helmet by a bouncer from Riley Meredith and had to retire hurt.

End of Cricket Career
In an interview with SEN Radio on April 8, Pucovski said, “I’m not going to be playing cricket again. It’s been a really difficult year. To put it simply, I won’t be playing at any level anymore.”
Struggling with Everyday Life
After his most recent concussion, Will Pucovski struggled with daily tasks. He explained, “In the months after the concussion, I found it hard to do anything. Walking around the house was difficult. My fiancée got upset because I couldn’t help with chores. I was sleeping a lot. It’s been a tough year, and many of the symptoms didn’t go away, which led me to this decision.” He added that the first few months were especially hard, and the symptoms didn’t improve over time.
Medical Panel’s Recommendation
Last year, an independent medical panel recommended that Will Pucovski retire from cricket. “I didn’t want to make a final decision until I was symptom-free. When you’re struggling, it’s hard to make such a big decision. The medical panel recommended I retire, and that was hard to accept. But they made it clear that the decision was ultimately mine.” (Also read: Bubba Wallace’s Secret to Success: Racing, Family, and Michael Jordan’s Texts)

Pucovski spent a lot of time trying to understand his brain injury and the reasons behind his ongoing problems. “There wasn’t a specific moment when I thought, ‘Today is the day to retire,’ but things just didn’t change. I held onto the dream as long as I could, but I also wanted to feel better and live a normal life. I don’t want to risk doing more damage to my brain.”
The Long-Term Effects of Concussions
Will Pucovski opened up about the lasting impact of repeated concussions. “It’s scary how much concussions have affected me. It’s not just the mental health symptoms; I also deal with extreme fatigue and regular headaches. I have difficulty with things on my left side. If something happens to my left side, I feel sick and dizzy. I also struggle with motion sickness.”
Disappointment at Career Cut Short
At just 27, Will Pucovski expressed disappointment that his career was cut short. “I have so much ahead of me, and I had so many goals. I wanted to play for another 15 years, but now that dream is over. At least I know I won’t get hit in the head again. However, the ongoing symptoms are frightening. I know how I was before these concussions, and I know how I am now. My family and friends have noticed the change, and that’s scary for all of us.”
A Brief but Promising Career
Will Pucovski, who rose quickly through the ranks and was seen as one of Australia’s future cricket stars, made his debut against India at the SCG in 2021. However, that will remain his only Test appearance. “It was always my dream to play for Australia, and I made it in 2021. But I wanted more—I aimed to be a leader in the batting lineup and play 100 Tests. Unfortunately, it’s just one Test match for me.”
