Sheikh Hasina Accuses Muhammad Yunus of Selling Bangladesh

Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has accused Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government, of selling the country to the United States. She also condemned the recent ban on her party, the Awami League, calling it unconstitutional. In an audio message posted on her party’s Facebook page, Hasina said Yunus took control of the government with help from extremist groups.
Muhammad Yunus Appointed Interim Leader
Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Prize winner, was appointed as the leader of the interim government on 7 August 2024. This happened just days after student protests forced Hasina to resign and leave Bangladesh. Hasina’s criticism came after reports that Yunus might resign following the military’s demand for general elections in December.
Hasina Accuses Yunus of Supporting Terrorists
Hasina claimed Yunus, who gained international fame during her time in power, has handed control to “terrorists” — the same groups her government fought hard against. She said, “My father never agreed to give away St. Martin’s Island to America. He died for that. I never wanted to sell the country just to stay in power.” (Also read: Asaduddin Owaisi Blasts Pakistan in Front of Global Leaders)
She also reminded people how Bangladeshis fought for independence with her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and said no one should give away even a small part of the country. But now, she said, it is sad that someone loved by the whole country and the world has come to power, and this is the result.
Allegation of Power Seizure with Extremist Help
Hasina repeated her claim that Muhammad Yunus took power with the help of terrorists. She said, “He came to power with support from banned groups. My government took strong action after terrorist attacks. Many militants were arrested and prisons were full. But now, they have all been released, and militants are ruling Bangladesh.”
Criticism of Awami League Ban and Constitution
Sheikh Hasina called Yunus a “militant leader” and criticized the government for banning the Awami League party. She said this ban is illegal and against the constitution. Hasina said, “Our constitution was made after a long struggle and the liberation war. Who gave this militant leader the right to change laws without a parliament? He has no public support or constitutional power. The Chief Advisor role is not legal. So how can he ban the Awami League? This is wrong.”
