BBC Releases Documentary on Sidhu Moose Wala

On June 11, the BBC World Service released a two-part documentary on the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala (real name: Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu). The release took place on the singer’s birth anniversary.
Family Opposes Release
Moose Wala’s father, Balkaur Singh Sidhu, filed a petition in the Mansa court (Punjab) to stop the documentary’s release. The hearing is scheduled for June 12.
The family had already raised objections and filed complaints against the BBC. Despite this, the BBC went ahead and published the film without their permission. The release came even before the family could launch their own tribute—an extended play (EP) of Sidhu’s unreleased songs.
What’s in the Documentary?
The film includes:
- Interviews with Sidhu Moose Wala’s old friends, journalists, and senior police officers from Punjab and Delhi.
- An audio interview with gangster Goldy Brar, who is accused of plotting Moose Wala’s murder on May 29, 2022, in Jawahar Ke village, Mansa district.
Change of Screening Plans
The BBC had planned to screen the documentary in a Mumbai cinema hall on June 11 at 3 PM. Invitations were sent out, claiming the film included unrevealed facts about the singer.
However, after backlash from the family and public, the BBC cancelled the cinema screening and uploaded the documentary on YouTube instead. Also read: Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Solved with Four Arrests.

BBC’s Description of the Documentary
In the YouTube video description, BBC wrote:
“On 29 May 2022, Sidhu Moose Wala was murdered by hired gunmen who tracked his car, shot him, and left him to die. Gangster Goldy Brar later claimed responsibility. Almost three years later, no one has been convicted, the motive is still unclear, and Brar remains at large.
This documentary follows Sidhu’s rise from rural Punjab to global fame, explores his link to organised crime, and includes a chilling phone call with the gangster who says he ordered the killing.”
BBC added that the story connects:
- Punjab’s villages
- Canada’s hip-hop scene
- Punjab’s history
- India’s current political environment
It also includes rare footage and interviews with Sidhu’s friends and collaborators, many speaking publicly for the first time.
Father’s Reaction
In a conversation with India Today, Sidhu Moose Wala’s father said:
“We objected to the documentary. It was released without our consent. We have already gone to the Mansa court and will soon move the High Court.”
Earlier Complaint to Police
Earlier, Balkaur Singh filed a complaint with the Maharashtra DGP and Juhu Police Station, saying that BBC planned to screen the documentary in Juhu, Mumbai, on June 11.
He also claimed that the film might damage his son’s legacy and was possibly an attempt to misrepresent him.
