Strong Earthquake Tremors Felt in Turkey and Nearby Regions
According to a report, strong tremors were felt in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, on Thursday around 3:46 pm. The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale, as reported by the independent scientific organisation EMSC. The epicentre was located about 14 km northeast of Kulu. However, there are no reports of any damage or injuries so far.
The tremors were strongly felt across Ankara, where President Erdogan was meeting with Ukraine’s President Zelensky at the time.
Turkiye’s disaster agency AFAD confirmed that the epicentre of the quake was in the Kulu district of Konya province.
While the diplomatic talks were going on, President Zelensky left for Albania and sent his delegation to Istanbul to continue the discussions. but as per Iran’s Mehr News Agency, no casualties or injuries have been reported yet.
This earthquake comes just a day after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit near Fry, Greece, on early Wednesday morning. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 1:51 am (local time) at a depth of 78 km under the sea.
Tremors from the Greece earthquake were felt in Cairo (Egypt), Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan. Since the epicentre was located in the sea in southeastern Greece, the local authorities also issued a tsunami warning as a safety measure.
The region is known to be earthquakes-prone. As per Turkey’s Disaster Management Authority, the country usually experiences at least one earthquake of magnitude 5 every year.
Earlier this year, the Santorini island (Greece) experienced several tremors, with many measuring above 5 in magnitude, but no major damage was reported during that time.
Back in February 2023, Turkey and Syria faced powerful earthquakes. The first earthquake measured 7.8, and it was followed by another 7.5 magnitude quake, along with many strong aftershocks. These caused many buildings to collapse, and the disaster led to a death toll of 59,000 in Turkey and 8,000 in Syria.
