Closed in observance of Buddha Purnima, a gazetted holiday commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, banks in many Indian states are closed today, May 12, 2025.
States including the following observe this holiday:
Tripura, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Delhi, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh.
Banks have thus closed in towns including Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, and Srinagar.
Still open in cities including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Imphal, Kochi, Kohima, Panaji, Patna, Shillong, and Thiruvananthapuram, however are banks remain open. Bank Holiday: May 11–18, 2025

- Sunday, May 11: Standard weekly bank holiday throughout India.
- Monday May 12: Banks closed in a few states and cities for Buddha Purnima.
- Friday May 16: Sikkim State Day closed banks in Sikkim.
- Regular weekend schedule; no special bank holidays noted; May 17 (Saturday) and May 18 (Sunday).
On bank holidays, digital banking products including UPI, IMPS, mobile banking, and automated teller machines (ATMs) keep running as usual. - The Buddha Purnima holiday in impacted states follows the second Saturday (May 10) and Sunday (May 11), so creating a three-day weekend. Consumers are advised to arrange their purchases accordingly.
- Stock markets (BSE and NSE) stay open on May 12 for trading in SLB segments, equity, and equity derivatives. The segment on currencies derivatives is closed, though.
Regular holidays are May 24, Fourth Saturday and May 25, Sunday.
o May 26: Closed at Tripura for the birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam.
May 29: Closed in Himachal Pradesh for Jayanti, Maharana Pratap.
