Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from ODIs
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell AKA Maxi has officially announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. He will now shift his focus to T20 formats. Maxwell’s decision marks the end of a career that spanned from 2012 to 2025. In 149 ODIs, he scored 3990 runs and picked up 77 wickets. He was also part of Australia’s victorious World Cup teams in 2015 and 2023.
Maxwell’s Explosive Batting and All-Round Skills
Maxwell was known for his explosive batting style. He scored runs at an average of 33.81 and maintained a strike rate of 126.70. His most memorable innings in ODIs came during the 2023 World Cup, where he scored an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan—considered one of the greatest ODI innings ever. He also scored three other centuries and 23 half-centuries.
As a bowler, Maxwell was a useful off-spinner, claiming four-wicket hauls on four occasions. In the field, he was a reliable fielder, taking 91 catches in ODIs throughout his career.
Focus on T20 World Cup 2026
Cricket Australia confirmed that Maxwell’s decision to retire from ODIs was made with the 2026 T20 World Cup in mind. The tournament will be held in India and Sri Lanka, and Maxwell plans to focus on preparations for the event. The board also mentioned that Maxwell would be concentrating on the Big Bash League (BBL) and his other international commitments. Reflecting on His Career
Maxi reflected on his career and his decision to retire, sharing, “I remember when I first started, I was picked unexpectedly, and I was just happy to play a few games for Australia. I never thought I’d go beyond that. Since then, I’ve had ups and downs, being dropped and brought back, playing in World Cups, and being part of some amazing teams.”
Last ODI Appearance and Injury
Maxi’s last ODI appearance was against India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Unfortunately, a leg injury has kept him out of the ongoing IPL, preventing him from participating in the tournament.
He explained, “I felt like I was letting the team down because my body wasn’t reacting well. I had a conversation with George Bailey (Chair of Selectors), and we discussed the 2027 World Cup. I told him I didn’t think I’d make it, so it was time to plan for the future and allow someone else to take my place.”
Maxwell’s Commitment to Australia
Maxi added, “I always said I wouldn’t hand over my position unless I truly felt I wasn’t good enough anymore. I didn’t want to hold on to the spot for selfish reasons. The team is heading in a clear direction, and this gives them the best chance to plan for the next World Cup.”
George Bailey’s Tribute
George Bailey, Maxwell’s former captain and current chair of selectors, praised Maxwell’s career, stating, “Glenn will always be remembered as one of the most dynamic players in ODI cricket. His natural talent, skill, and energy on the field were exceptional. His ability with the ball, his longevity, and his commitment to playing for Australia have been remarkable.”
Bailey also mentioned that Maxwell will remain an important figure for Australia in T20 cricket, adding, “He will be crucial for us in the coming year as we prepare for the next World Cup.”
