Vote Counting Begins for KHADC and JHADC Elections

The counting of votes for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections started this morning at all designated centers across Meghalaya, as confirmed by poll officials. The results are expected soon, deciding the fate of 272 candidates—158 in KHADC and 114 in JHADC. Among these candidates, 12 women are contesting in KHADC and 7 in JHADC.
Voter Turnout Highlights
The two ADCs have a combined 13 lakh voters. During the elections held on February 21, JHADC recorded a voter turnout of 85.58%, while KHADC saw 76.77% participation. In KHADC, the overall turnout was 72.45%, with Sohiong constituency leading at 86.06% and Jirang recording the lowest at 51.46%. Over 1.3 million tribal voters cast their votes to decide the fate of the 272 candidates results.
Peaceful Voting with Minor Disruptions
The voting process was largely peaceful across most areas. However, a few disruptions were reported at some polling stations in East Jaintia Hills, according to media reports.
No Clear Majority Expected
As per The Shillong Times, no single party is likely to win an absolute majority in either KHADC or JHADC. Political experts suggest that the diverse goals of the electorate and past trends indicate a fragmented mandate, continuing Meghalaya’s tradition of coalition politics.
Possible Coalition Government
In the event of a split verdict, the ruling MDA alliance partners—NPP, UDP, and HDPDP—are expected to form a coalition in both KHADC and JHADC. The final results will reveal whether history repeats itself or if any party manages to secure a clear majority, defying expectations.
