Major Oil Discovery in UP’s Ballia – Farmers & Economy to Benefit!
Big News: ONGC has found crude oil in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh (UP), after a 3-month survey in the Ganga basin. The oil was discovered 3,000 metres underground on land belonging to the family of freedom fighter Chittu Pandey.

Key Details:
- ONGC has taken 6.5 acres of Pandey family’s land on a 3-year lease, paying ₹10 lakh per year.
- Drilling is going on right now and will finish by April 2025.
- The operation uses 25,000 litres of water daily.
What Happens Next?
If this oil reserve is profitable, ONGC will start drilling in more locations across a 300-km belt from Ballia to Prayagraj. This means:
✔ More jobs for locals
✔ Higher land prices for farmers (ONGC may buy more land)
✔ Economic boost for Ballia – could become a new oil hub!
What Locals Say:
Neel Pandey (Chittu Pandey’s descendant) said:
“ONGC is paying well for the land. If oil is found, farmers will get good money for their fields.”
India’s Oil Reserves & ONGC’s Role:
- India has 587 million metric tonnes of crude oil (as of 2021).
- Most oil is in Mumbai High (offshore), Assam, and Gujarat.
- ONGC (started in 1956) is India’s top oil explorer.
- In 2024, ONGC found 5 new oil & gas sites to reduce imports.
Why This Matters?
✅ Less dependence on foreign oil
✅ More jobs & money for UP’s farmers
✅ Ballia could become a major oil-producing district!
