Rajeev Shukla to Become Interim President of BCCI

Veteran cricket administrator Rajeev Shukla is set to take over as the interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He will replace former India cricketer Roger Binny, who is stepping down due to the BCCI’s age-limit clause. Binny, who turns 70 on July 19, is required to vacate the position, as per the board’s constitution, which states that no individual can hold a post after reaching the age of 70.
Age-Cap Rule Triggers Leadership Change
As per the BCCI rules, in the event the president is unavailable, the vice-president assumes the role. Since Shukla currently holds the position of vice-president, he will step in as the interim president. The rules also allow the vice-president to take on additional functions as decided by the General Body of the Apex Council. Shukla’s tenure as interim president is expected to last until September, when elections for the next set of office-bearers for the BCCI will be held.
Similar Leadership Change in the Past
This situation mirrors a similar instance that occurred last year when Jay Shah was elected as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). As a result, Shah had to vacate his position as the BCCI secretary, and Devajit Sakia, who was the joint secretary at the time, served as the interim secretary until elections were held.
Rajeev Shukla’s Cricket Administration Career
Shukla, a 65-year-old Congress Rajya Sabha MP, has been a long-time cricket administrator. Known for his experience, he has been involved with cricket for many years, serving in various roles. The former journalist-turned-politician is recognized as the cricket board’s “man for all seasons.” Shukla served as the IPL commissioner from 2011 to 2017 and was elected as the BCCI vice-president in 2020, a position he was re-elected to in 2022.
What’s Next for Shukla?
Rajeev Shukla’s leadership will be pivotal in overseeing the functioning of the BCCI during this transitional period until the next election in September.
