World Sparrow Day: A Call for Conservation
World Sparrow Day, celebrated every year on March 20, raises awareness about the rapidly declining sparrow population and emphasizes the need for their protection. These small yet significant birds, once a common sight in urban backyards and green spaces, have been vanishing at an alarming rate over the past two decades. According to WWF India, sparrow populations have dropped across almost every city. The theme for World Sparrow Day 2025, “A Tribute to Nature’s Tiny Messengers,” highlights the vital role sparrows play in maintaining ecological balance and urges us to act for their conservation.

The Importance of Sparrows
Sparrows are crucial for the environment. They help control insect populations by feeding on bugs and pests, and their role in pollination and seed dispersal enhances biodiversity. Their presence is vital for the health of both rural and urban ecosystems, making them an essential part of our natural world.
Despite their importance, sparrows face numerous challenges. The use of unleaded petrol has resulted in toxic chemicals that harm the insects sparrows depend on for food. Urbanization has stripped away their natural nesting spaces, and modern buildings no longer provide the necessary areas for sparrows to raise their young. Additionally, pesticide use in farming has reduced insect numbers, further threatening sparrows’ food supply. Increasing numbers of crows and cats, combined with a lack of green spaces, have only worsened the situation.
A Growing Crisis
Once a familiar part of daily life, sparrows have now become a rare sight. In India, they are known by various names like “Goraiya” in Hindi, “Kuruvi” in Tamil, and “Chirya” in Urdu. Their cheerful songs used to fill the mornings, particularly in villages, creating unforgettable memories. However, due to factors like urbanization, pollution, and lifestyle changes, sparrows are disappearing from our lives, leaving a void that’s hard to ignore.
World Sparrow Day: A Global Initiative
World Sparrow Day was first celebrated in 2010, initiated by the Nature Forever Society of India and the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France. The idea was to dedicate a day to raising awareness about the house sparrow and to promote its protection. Over time, the event has spread to more than 50 countries, and in 2012, the house sparrow became Delhi’s state bird, further bringing attention to the cause.
World Sparrow Day is now a global movement, inspiring people to take action to protect these tiny yet vital creatures. The day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to restore the harmony between nature and humanity. By supporting conservation efforts, we can help bring sparrows back into our lives and preserve biodiversity.

Conservation Efforts: Small Actions, Big Impact
Across the country, many inspiring conservation efforts are making a difference. One such initiative is the “Save the Sparrow” campaign, led by environmental conservationist Jagat Kinkhabwala, which emphasizes the need for balancing development with environmental protection. This campaign gained momentum when Prime Minister Modi supported it in 2017, significantly raising awareness.
Another remarkable project is led by the Koodugal Trust in Chennai, where school children are actively involved in building sparrow nests. These small wooden houses provide shelter and food for sparrows, and over the course of four years (2020–2024), the trust has built over 10,000 nests, resulting in a noticeable increase in sparrow numbers. These efforts highlight the importance of involving younger generations in conservation and protecting nature.
In Mysuru, Karnataka, the “Early Bird” campaign educates children about birds through libraries, activity kits, and trips to observe birds in their natural habitats. These programs help foster an understanding of the critical role sparrows and other birds play in nature.
Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal has also made a personal commitment to sparrow conservation. He has set up 50 nests at his home, where sparrows return each year to lay their eggs, ensuring they are well-fed and cared for. His efforts have even earned praise from PM Modi, who recognizes the importance of such grassroots initiatives.
A Call to Action
World Sparrow Day serves as a reminder that the conservation of sparrows and other birds is essential for preserving the balance of our environment. Whether it’s by planting more greenery, reducing pesticide use, or creating safe nesting spaces, every small action counts. By celebrating World Sparrow Day, we can all contribute to restoring the connection between humanity and nature.
How to Celebrate
You can celebrate World Sparrow Day by taking part in various activities, such as:
- Installing bird feeders with grains and water to support sparrows.
- Creating small nesting boxes in your garden or balcony.
- Organizing awareness programs in schools or communities.
- Joining local bird conservation groups and initiatives.
By doing so, we can help protect sparrows, ensuring they continue to play their crucial role in the ecosystem for generations to come.
