Trump’s Statement on India’s Tariff Reduction

US President Donald Trump has claimed that India has agreed to lower tariffs on American imports, alleging that his administration has exposed unfair trade practices. This comes as both countries are discussing a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) aimed at reducing trade barriers and increasing market access. Meanwhile, Tesla is lobbying for zero import duties as it seeks to enter the Indian market. However, the Indian government has not confirmed any tariff reductions, though discussions with the US continue.

Trump Accuses India of “Massive” Tariffs
Trump recently stated that India would lower its tariffs on American goods, accusing the country of imposing “massive” trade barriers. In his comments, he said, “India charges us huge tariffs. Massive. You can’t sell anything in India… They have agreed, by the way; they want to lower their tariffs because finally, someone is exposing what they’ve been doing.”
Remarks Made at the White House
Speaking from the White House, Trump emphasized, “India charges us massive tariffs. You can’t even sell anything there. They’ve agreed to cut their tariffs significantly because now someone is exposing them for what they’ve done.”
Rising Trade Tensions
These remarks come amid growing trade tensions between the US and several of its key partners, including Canada, China, Mexico, and India. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has acknowledged that talks are ongoing but has not confirmed any decision regarding tariff cuts.
